May Birthstone – Enchanting Emerald!

Celebrate May birthdays with the birthstone for this month, Emerald.

Emerald - birthstone for MayWho first beholds the light of day

In spring’s sweet, flower month of May

And wears an Emerald all her life

Shall be a loved and a loving wife

The gorgeous green tones of Emerald welcome anyone born in May. This stunning stone is associated with faithfulness, friendship and relationships, making it the perfect stone for all you romantics out there. It is said to symbolise understanding, patience and memory, and is mined in South America and Africa. By weight, it is actually the most valuable gemstone in the world, thanks to its glorious, rich green colourings.

In mythology, Emerald was said to be the talisman of Venus, the goddess of love, and the gemstone is still associated with loyal and loving relationships. They were also popular with the ancient Egyptian royalty, and Queen Cleopatra is said to have owned pieces of Emerald jewellery.

Jewellery designers have long been attracted to the fresh, vibrant colour of Emerald, and the colour green is associated with new birth and regeneration. It goes especially well with the warmth of gold, and creates gorgeous pieces of jewellery that can be treasured for years to come.

April Birthstone – Dazzling Diamond!

Celebrate April birthdays with the birthstone for this month, Diamond.

Diamond - the birthstone for April

“She who from April dates her years,
diamonds shall wear,
lest bitter tears
For vain repentance flow.”

For all you lucky ladies born in April, it’s the most dazzling of all precious stones, Diamond, that represents your month of birth. The beautiful sparkle of Diamond has been desired by man for hundreds of years, and it has become one of the most sought after stones for jewellery design. Not only does it glitter like no other stone, but it is believed to enhance relationships and aid your inner strength, representing clarity, balance and innocence.

Diamond takes its name from the greek word “adamas“, meaning invincible, for its incredible strength and hardness – it is the hardest substance found in nature. Diamonds are classified by the 4 Cs clarity, cut, colour and carat weight – with the clearest stones being the most expensive. Though white or clear diamonds are the most common, they actually occur with many different colours and tints – it is possible to find pink, yellow and black Diamonds, though these can be incredibly rare and valuable.

Diamond is usually set into Gold jewellery, although many innovative companies such as Hot Diamonds and White Ice are now combining the luxury of Diamonds with the simplicity of Sterling Silver. Jewellery designers often opt for manmade Cubic Zirconia instead of Diamonds, which offers a similar sparkle for a much lower price – Thomas Sabo and Fiorelli, for example. Diamond is also the traditional stone in engagement rings, thanks to both its beautiful sparkle and its apparent potential to enhance relationships.

It’s all about Friendship Bracelets this season!

The Friendship Bracelet gets a new lease of life this season, as designers present their fresh takes on this traditional gift with a sentimental twist.

Designer Friendship Bracelets from Azuni, perfect for gifts

Designer Friendship Bracelets from Azuni, from £79

Friendship Bracelets are taking the fashion world by storm this Spring,  and about time too! I still remember the fun I had making my own friendship bracelets for my friends and family when I was younger… being homemade they never lasted very long, but it always put a smile on someone’s face to receive a gift that is traditionally symbolic of friendship.

While friendship bracelets are traditionally handmade, it’s fantastic to see the trend for friendship-style bracelets spreading to the world of designer jewellery! The custom for the receiver of a friendship bracelet is to wear it constantly until the knots wear through – to remove it before then is supposed to be a sign that the friendship is over. But it’s not always practical to wear a bracelet all the time, especially as it starts to wear out! The trend for designer friendship bracelets means you can give something a gift with the same symbolic meaning, which they can treasure forever.

At fabulous we’re delighted to be stocking the brand new designer friendship bracelets from one of our favourite, established designers, Azuni. Azuni have updated the traditional friendship bracelet by inscribing special messages onto Sterling Silver and 18ct Gold Vermeil plates, elegantly hung from Silk cord in three gorgeous colours.

February Birthstone – Amazing Amethyst!

Celebrate February birthdays with the birthstone for this month, Amethyst.

February birthstone - amazing amethyst!“The February born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they, the amethyst will wear.”

The beautiful purple colourings of Amethyst make it one of the most popular gemstones used in jewellery. Ranging from pale lilac through to rich mauve, Amethyst is symbolic of sincerity, peace and inner strength, believed to give the wearer courage and a calm disposition.

Amethyst takes its name from the Greek for “not intoxicated”, born from the stone’s reputation for preventing drunkenness!  In mythology, Dionysus, the god of wine and intoxication, persued a maiden named Amethystos. She refused his affections, and prayed to the goddess Artemis to remain chaste, who transformed her into a beautiful white stone. Dionysus, shamed and humbled by Amethystos’ desire to remain chaste, poured wine over the stone as an offering and thus died the crystals their signature purple colour.

Amethyst was also worn by medieval European soldiers for protection in battle, due to its association with healing and cool-headedness. It is mined in Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia, and the qualities of the stone vary between localities, and even individual mines. Amethyst is a favourite stone of many of the designers at fabulous, and features in designs by Dower & Hall, Azuni, Thomas Sabo and Spinning Jewelry.

Loved up this Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is traditionally celebrated on the 14th February, but just where did the tradition come from?

Happy Valentine's Day from fabulous!Celebrated by lovers the world over, the feast day of Saint Valentine is the perfect opportunity to show your affection for a special someone by buying a gift or sending a Valentine’s card. However, not much is really known about Saint Valentine, or why his feast day has become so strongly associated with love.

Saint Valentine was apparently a priest who was martyred in Africa and buried on the Via Flamina in Rome on the 14th February. Beyond this, little is known about who he was or what he did, though several legends and myths exist. There is a story that Valentine was a priest who objected to a law decreed by Roman Emperor Claudius II which ordered that young men remain single, as married men did not make for good soldiers. Valentine conducted marriage ceremonies in secret, and was arrested for helping persecuted Christian couples.

As the traditions of courtly love became popular in 14th and 15th century Europe, Chaucer made reference to the romantic nature of Saint Valentine’s Day in his poem Parlement of Foules. On Valentine’s Day in the year 1400, a High Court of Love was established in Paris, dealing with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. Judges were selected by women on the basis of a poetry reading!

From then on, it became popular to exchange verses and declarations of love, a tradition which developed into the Valentine’s cards we send and receive today!

So, if you’re feeling loved up this Valentine’s Day, then make sure you let that special person know how much they mean to you!

(However, if you’re happily single, how about checking out some alternative Valentine’s celebrations from across the world here!)

Roses are Red,

Violets are Blue,

We think you’re all fabulous,

and lovely too!
