fabulous Still Has Royal Fever!

As Her Majesty The Queen opened the Royal Fabergé exhibition last week, there’s another reason why royal style is on everyone’s lips this season!

So far 2011 has been a right royal year! With two of her grand-children tying the knot in the last few months, we’d have thought the Queen would be looking forward to taking a rest – but instead, this Summer, Buckingham Palace’s State Rooms will be open to the public (although we don’t think Her Majesty will be guiding the tours!) As part of the Summer Opening a special exhibition of the royal family’s extensive Fabergé collection is taking place.

The Royal Fabergé exhibition includes over 100 masterpieces by Peter Carl Fabergé, the greatest Russian jeweller and goldsmith of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and explores how six successive generations of the British Royal Family, from Queen Victoria to Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, have shaped the finest collection of Fabergé in the world – unparalleled in size, range and quality.

The success of Fabergé’s business was inextricably linked to the patronage of the Romanov dynasty and the close ties between the British, Danish and Russian royal families, who often exchanged works by Fabergé as personal gifts. The exhibition includes a number of works on public display for the first time.

Fabergé is most famous for the decorative eggs he created for the Russian Tsars; the designs of which were opulent and stunning. The vast majority of his designs were never repeated, and most pieces were made entirely by hand. Recently there has been a renewal of interest in Fabergé’s one of a kind pieces, especially with this Summer’s exhibition showcasing the priceless items. The exquisite and delicate works have also been revived by the jewellery brand Alfabergé, who owns some of Fabergé’s original designs, and have created new ones inspired by his style, to produce delicate Fabergé influenced jewellery.

Alfaberge‘s range of charm pendants and necklaces retains the lavish feel and intricate detailing of Fabergé’s work, but in miniature form to produce truly dazzling pieces of jewellery. Beautiful enamel work combined with Gold and embellished with Swarovski crystals gives these timeless and elegant pieces a contemporary edge.

The jewellery is perfect for special occasions, either as a gift for a loved one – or for yourself!! The pendants are especially versatile as they can be attached to any type of chain, and will add an imperial, sophisticated edge to any outfit!

However, we can’t promise they will make you the next Kate Middleton…

Browse the fabulous collections range of Alfabergé here.

The Royal Fabergé exhibition is open until 3rd October 2011. For tickets and visitor information go to www.royalcollection.org.uk

June Birthstone - Pearl - Gift Ideas

“By her who in this month was born
No gem save Pearls shall be worn
They will ensure her constancy
True friendship and fidelity.”

– June Birthstone Poem

All about Pearls

The traditional birthstone for June, Pearls have long been admired for their beautiful natural glow and white-cream colourings. Pearl is associated with faithfulness and friendship and symbolises purity and modesty. Pearls are generally found with creamy-white tones, but it is possible to get pink, grey and lilac Pearls as well. Natural saltwater or freshwater Pearls are formed inside the shells of mollusks such as oysters, caused by a foreign body such as a grain of sand which causes an irritation. They can also be manmade to produce cultured Pearls, and a good sized pearl takes around five years to grow.

The beautiful lustre of Pearls has made them the darlings of many jewellery designers over the years. Pearl jewellery was the favourite of the ever-glamorous Coco Chanel, and their classic glamour was seen on many screen starlets in Hollywood’s golden age. They’re popular with many designers at fabulous, including Argent of London and Trollbeads. Mother of Pearl is also used in many jewellery designs – it’s more versatile than Pearl but shares the same beautiful glow.

Did you know?

  • The ancient Greeks believed that Pearls promote marital bliss and that a Pearl necklace can prevent newly-wed brides from crying.
  • Several factors are considered when evaluating the value of a Pearl. The most important factor for jewellers is the Pearl’s luster, but size, colour, flawlessness and symmetry are also significant.

You can read more about Pearls and their interesting history over at Wikipedia!

How to care for your Pearl Jewellery

Pearls are very delicate, fragile gemstones, and require gentle TLC! But when properly looked after they can last for generations, so here are our top tips on how to care for and clean your Pearl jewellery:

  • Try not to let your Pearls come into contact with perfume, make-up or moisturiser. This will help keep your Pearls clean, and will also ensure that they don’t come into contact with any chemicals that could diminish their beauty.
  • If you need to clean your Pearls, find a soft cloth and gently polish them. You can dampen the cloth if it helps, but be sure to air your Pearls after polishing them to let them dry.
  • The chlorine in swimming pools can damage your Pearls – so make sure to remove your jewellery before swimming.
  • Never place your Pearls in commercial Silver cleaner! Commercial Silver ‘dipping’ cleaners are becoming more readily available, and are a great way to return some sparkle to your Silver Jewellery. But the delicacy of Pearls means they will lose some of their lustre and may change in colour when dipped in these cleaners, and once a Pearl is ruined it can’t be repaired… so protect your Pearls!
  • It’s often recommended that you have your Pearl necklaces and bracelets re-strung every year if you wear them frequently. This is a good idea to prevent stretching and possible breakage.
  • Another top tip is to store your Pearls carefully away from other, harder jewellery (such as Diamonds), which might scratch the Pearls.
  • Pearls don’t like the heat, so where possible it’s safest to avoid wearing your Pearls while cooking, and if you spill anything hot on them, try to gently clean them with a cloth straight away.

April Birthstone – Dazzling Diamond!

Celebrate April birthdays with the birthstone for this month, Diamond.

Diamond - the birthstone for April

“She who from April dates her years,
diamonds shall wear,
lest bitter tears
For vain repentance flow.”

For all you lucky ladies born in April, it’s the most dazzling of all precious stones, Diamond, that represents your month of birth. The beautiful sparkle of Diamond has been desired by man for hundreds of years, and it has become one of the most sought after stones for jewellery design. Not only does it glitter like no other stone, but it is believed to enhance relationships and aid your inner strength, representing clarity, balance and innocence.

Diamond takes its name from the greek word “adamas“, meaning invincible, for its incredible strength and hardness – it is the hardest substance found in nature. Diamonds are classified by the 4 Cs clarity, cut, colour and carat weight – with the clearest stones being the most expensive. Though white or clear diamonds are the most common, they actually occur with many different colours and tints – it is possible to find pink, yellow and black Diamonds, though these can be incredibly rare and valuable.

Diamond is usually set into Gold jewellery, although many innovative companies such as Hot Diamonds and White Ice are now combining the luxury of Diamonds with the simplicity of Sterling Silver. Jewellery designers often opt for manmade Cubic Zirconia instead of Diamonds, which offers a similar sparkle for a much lower price – Thomas Sabo and Fiorelli, for example. Diamond is also the traditional stone in engagement rings, thanks to both its beautiful sparkle and its apparent potential to enhance relationships.
