New York Fashion Week – Keep on Trend!

Combining the latest fashions on the catwalk with the next big thing in jewellery can be a tricky prospect, so here are our suggestions on how to keep your wardrobe and accessories on trend this season

New York Fashion week is drawing to a close, and while some are calling this year’s themes ‘restrained’, we think there were some fabulous and highly wearable new trends on display.

Lace and Fur

Subtle opulence is big this season, with lavish black lace and foxy fur trims featuring all over the catwalk this week. Whether you’re already on the look out for a place to show off a new lace dress, or keen to get your hands on some colourful fur boots that you’ll wear day in day out, there’s a perfect piece of jewellery just waiting to complete your new look! Pearls are the perfect companion to lace and fur, continuing the theme of sophisticated luxury without drawing too much attention away from your killer outfit, letting those elaborate lace designs and bold fur patterns shine.

January Birthstone – Gorgeous Garnet!

Celebrate January birthdays with the birthstone for this month, Garnet

Garnet“By her who is this month was born
No gem save garnets shall be worn
They will ensure her constancy
True friendship and fidelity.”

The beautiful rich red tones of Garnet are traditionally associated with purity, truth, faithfulness and friendship. It was popularly used in Victorian jewellery, and supposedly derives its name from its resemblance to Pomegranate seeds. Found in Sri Lanka, India, Africa and even the US, there is a biblical legend that Noah hung garnet on the ark to guide the way through the dark, stormy nights of God’s wrath. Perhaps for this reason, Garnet is also regarded as a protective gemstone for journeyers, symbolic of the desire for a loved one’s safe travel and speedy homecoming.

Although most often found in beautiful dark red, Garnet also appears in almost every other colour, including vibrant greens and, on rare occasions, rich blues. Many designers at fabulous use Garnet, including Azuni, Dower & Hall and Thomas Sabo, as its wonderful colour provides a flash of warmth during winter, and a cheerful brightness during summer.

The new year also welcomes Capricorns into the world from 22nd December to 21st January. The zodiac symbol for Capricorn is the goat, and people with this star sign tend to be trustworthy, persistent, ambitious and patient.

2011 is the year of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac – people born in the year of the Rabbit are supposedly the luckiest of all the zodiac signs, and are peaceful, quiet and loving.
