School of Jewellery fabulous Futures Awards!

Last night saw the end of year show from the graduating students of the School of Jewellery in Birmingham. Fabulous works with students on the Design for Industry BA(Hons) course, giving retail and commercial input at various points throughout the course. As well as supporting the course with tutorials and work experience, and being on the end of year panel, Fabulous awards up to two ‘Fabulous Futures’ awards every year, choosing the designer or designers who show the most promise, and whom owner Jo Stroud and Creative Manager Sinade Prosser feel that Fabulous can help the most.

The winner of this year’s Fabulous Futures award is Suzannah Key, a young designer from Devon who has created a beautiful range of Spinning pendants. Susannah is a talented artist who draws extremely well, and is able to follow through her sketches all the way through into casting them into her jewellery collection. Suzannah will showcase her designs at the Fabulous Garden Party; have mentoring sessions with Jo, Sinade, Rhian and the team to help her develop her proposition, pricing, branding, website and business plan; and receives a £400 bursary to help with materials and general expenses as she gets started.

“Suzannah’s designs are just perfect. They have been beautifully cast, and have a lovely weight and quality to them. We are really looking forward to helping Suzannah bring them to market,” explains Jo.

This year was very tough, with so many talented designers graduating from the programme, but they decided to focus all their efforts on Suzannah this year, rather than splitting the award. Other highly commended stars this year included:

  • Rebecca Wilkes, who gorgeous flower rings are set to become huge. “I can see them on the pages of Elle and Vogue,” says Jo. “Rebecca is very creative, and her designs are a perfect fit for high fashion.”
  •  Katy Tromans also really impressed Jo and Sinade, with her intricately-realised fairy tale creations, “Like nothing else I have ever seen – beautiful!”, added Sinade.
  • And Charlotte Rowenna’s gorgeous stone-set rings looked like they had come out of the sea fully formed, inspired by barnacles, mussels and driftwood.

“I really wish all the young designers well going forward – I wish we could help all of them! There was so much talent this year, and they were really focused on their target audience, branding and brand story, as well as the jewellery designs – so we were incredibly impressed with them. The School of Jewellery is doing a fantastic job at training these young designers to be ready for the real world.”

Having a moment: Paradise Prints

It’s seconds away from May and the promise of a fabulous Summer is on the horizon (OK it snowed this week but we’re ignoring that) with payday around the corner I’ve been compiling a Summer wish list ready for holidays, a fun social calendar and well, just because! I’m known in fabulous for my colour aversion but something has happened this season and my eye is drawn to vibrant palettes and busy prints. I love the combination of bright flora and forna in watercolour strokes and neon shades, I’ve decided I’m a convert – and I’m calling it paradise prints, because I’m not a ‘floral’ person!

On my lust list…

It all started with this watch from Ice – I love it!

Then after wondering what the brands from my teen years were up to, I re-visited Warehouse, and boy am I glad I did. My wedding guest wardrobe will solely be from them this year as well as many a holiday outfit!

We’ve been working with our friends from Mercy this season, and we love their Druzy Rocks collection. I love the lustre of the crystals, they’re the perfect way to add a splash of colour to your look and the beautiful card they come on looks great in my jewellery box!

There’s no better way to brighten up your bedroom than a fabulous set of bedding (you know you’re getting older when a duvet cover is as exciting as a new pair of shoes!) I love this one from BHS, £65 for Superking

Update on my training for the London Marathon – Jo Stroud

As many of you know, I am running in the London Marathon in April, to raise money for Breast Cancer Now.

I ran in the Bath Half Marathon last weekend, to test my progress and to experience running with 15,000 people. What a great day! Gorgeous sunshine, huge camaraderie, and a beautiful city to run around.

However, I found the run very tough. More hilly than I expected; hard to get a good pace with so many people; and bad cramp in my knee and foot, 4 miles from the end.

So, a tough race, and a good wake-up call, 6 weeks before London, that I need to work harder. If anyone has any good cures for cramp, then do let me know – tweet us @FabCollection or post to our Facebook page /FabulousCollections. I am trying magnesium supplements and spray, and doing a lot more stretching before a run now.

My fund-raising is going well, thanks to the generosity of so many customers, designers, and friends. I am at £2700 now, aiming to get to £3000 by the time of the run. It’s a brilliant cause – Breast Cancer Now – so I would love to reach the £3000 goal. I have a fund-raising page set up at

I’ll continue to keep you updated with my progress over the final few weeks, as April 24th looms ever closer! Thanks very much for reading this, and for your support.

Top Romantic Spots for Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day around the corner we’re dreaming of where we’d love to spend the most romantic day of the year! We’ve already picked out our dream jewellery so now it’s time for some location spotting…

For a location close to our Solihull store we’re lusting after a spot at Marco Pierre White’s roof-top restaurant in The Cube, we’re not so bothered about the food, more the cocktails overlooking the city!

We’re lucky enough to visit Bath often and we love it, it’s such a beautiful city full of character and history which makes it the perfect romantic city break. So if Bath was our Valentine’s location we’d definitely head to the Thermae Spa for a roof-top dip in the natural thermal waters before visiting one of Bath’s many amazing bars and restaurants. We love the Art Bar in the Abbey Hotel for cocktails and Sotto Sotto for fabulous Italian food.

Head office is based in Leamington Spa which also has a plethora of amazing bars and restaurants perfect for the romantic occasion. We’d head to Morgan’s Bar above Restaurant 23 for cocktails (which we have been known to treat ourselves to after management meetings) we love the art deco interior and recommend the espresso martini, and then we’d heat out for a cosy dinner at Wildes.

What are your plans this Valentine’s Day? Do you have a recommendation for our fabulous areas?

London Marathon Training Update, Jo

As you know, I am running in the London Marathon in April, to raise money for Breast Cancer Now.

I am now 4 weeks into my 16-week training programme, with 12 weeks to go before the big day!

I am up to 18km (11 miles) on my long runs, getting up to 21km by next week, which is half-marathon distance. I have run one half-marathon before – Stratford, last April – so it will be good to see if my time has improved over the year.

I have been listening to motivational audio books and talks as I train. A great TED talk to watch while doing challenging hill sprints on a treadmill is by Diana Nyad, who was the first person to swim the 100 miles from Cuba to Florida, in shark-infested waters. Diana finally did it, in 2013, on her 5th attempt – at the age of 64. Her mantra, to somehow ‘find a way’, kept her going; and I have decided to adopt this as my mantra for 2016.

Find a Way quote

The marathon is clearly going to be very tough, but it is the thought that I am raising money for such a good cause that motivates me as I train. Breast Cancer Now is determined to stop deaths from breast cancer by 2050. Although many more survive than ever before, 1000 women every month still die from it in the UK.

This inspirational charity organised a superb marathon training day last weekend, with talks on nutrition, injury prevention and training, where I also met many of the other runners aiming to raise vital funds for the charity.

We heard a fascinating talk by Shane Foo, one of Breast Cancer Now’s researchers, about ground-breaking research he and his team are undertaking on the way breast cancer tumours behave, and why they so often spread to other organs. Shane’s team are aiming to find ways of slowing down or stopping their spread.

Shane Foo, researcher.jpg

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far. I know it’s tough to find extra cash at this time of year, so soon after Christmas, so I am very appreciative of everyone who has already sponsored me in my quest to raise £3000 for Breast Cancer Now. I still have some way to go, but I am making good progress!

I’d love it if you would support me with some sponsorship, if you can. I have a fund-raising page set up at

I’ll continue to keep you updated with my progress over the next few weeks, as the date gets closer! Thanks very much for reading this, and for your support.

Having a Moment: Arrows

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Cupid is gracing the covers of cards and romantic gifts, his bow and arrow synonymous with the romantic time of year. Alex and Ani have referenced the arrow in their ‘hooked on you’ collection for Valentine’s Day 2016, but the arrow has a rich history of symbolism, anchored in Native American Indians traditions…

  • Two Arrows pointing away from each other depicts war
  • Arrows crossed over shows friendship
  • More than 3 arrows represents strength,  it’s easy to snap one arrow where as a bunch of arrows is much harder to break, symbolising solidarity
  • A broken arrow represents a feud coming to an end, the end of a disagreement or war

We love the arrow, for us at fabulous it symbolises overcoming difficult times, it represents the path of your life and reminds us that sometimes you have to be pulled backwards in order to be propelled forwards in a new exciting direction.

As January comes to an end, we want to continue to soar on the excitement of the New Year. The arrow reminds us that we still have a whole year of exciting adventures and that we are very much aiming forward. Here are the Arrow items we have our eyes on this payday…

Motivation Monday: 5 ways to beat the blues!

According to The Telegraph, Blue Monday was in fact a marketing ploy from a holiday company, based on weather conditions and debt levels they believed that the third Monday in January was the most depressing. We can all agree that Mondays aren’t always the best day, but with the added pressure of New Year’s Resolutions slipping by the wayside this time of year can feel a bit blue. So here’s 5 things to do today that will cheer you up!

  1. Get some fresh air

Don’t be tempted to stay couped up in your office or front room. It may be cold outside but some fresh air really blows out the cobwebs, so venture out for a walk wrapped up warm and really take in your surroundings. Don’t rush, just take in the beauty around you, you’ll instantly feel upbeat.

2. Plan a lovely meal

Think of your favourite winter warmer, or plan a huge healthy salad that you’ve been wanting to try out. Head to your local grocer and butcher in your lunch break and buy some lovely ingredients, you’ll be supporting local businesses, will get wonderful ingredients and can look forward to a great meal tonight. Whoever gets to enjoy the meal with you will be made up!

3. Do some exercise

Was it your New Years Resolution and has started to fall by the wayside? Don’t let it! Go for a walk or a jog, do an exercise video at home or if you joined the gym go and use it. Ten minutes will be enough to get your pulse racing and to feel great, all of those endorphins will banish the Monday blues (and you can be smug on Tuesday).

4. Treat Yourself

January is often a quiet month, we’re all feeling the pinch after Christmas and early paydays so it can feel like a long time with no treats. Set yourself a small budget and treat yourself. If it’s under £10, Lauren G Adams rings are now just £9, Daisy Alpha Jewellery starts at just £10.50 and Thomas Sabo Letter Pendants are only £9.98

5. Read a book in bed

Research shows that we need between six and nine hours sleep a night, we also know that tech should be banished from the bedroom. The blue light emitting from phones and tablets stops us from feeling sleepy, so before you know it you’re awake way past your bedtime and all you’ve accomplished is a social media catch up! So head to bed an hour earlier than normal, banish your phone and escape in a good book.

What are your top tips for banishing the blues? We’d love to know in the comments below…
