Our top 5 dream destinations for Thanksgiving

This year at fabulous we welcomed some amazing American brands, so we’re celebrating Thanksgiving by putting together our ultimate guide to the holiday season in America. Today, we’ve travelled to America (virtually) via the ultimate daydream site Air bnb to pick our top 5 places to celebrate Thanksgiving!

5. Florida

We imagine Florida is a pretty awesome place to spend Thanksgiving, we’d be thankful for the warm weather (averaging 16-25 degrees in November) , the walk to the beach and the stunning interior of this classic Floridian apartment. We love the stripped wood and beautiful furniture. No one does the holidays like Disneyland which is just over 2 hours drive away – perfect!

4. Aspen

Snowy mountains, cosy cabins, pendleton blankets and a huge family is how we imagine Thanksgiving at this heavenly ‘condo’ in Aspen. It may sound pricey but it sleeps 14, has 5 bathrooms a bar and hot tub, which might be a challenge as Aspen hits lows of -5 in November! This definitely hits the spot (and yes, our choice of Aspen was inspired by Dumb and Dumber).

3. Chicago

Coming a close second to New York, Chicago is fast becoming the city to be in for Thanksgiving with it’s own parade (The McDonalds parade) and the largest German Christmas market outside of Europe, Christkindlmarket. We chose this amazing apartment located near State Street so you could watch the parade from the comfort of your own home.

Rita’s apartment is £122 per night and sleeps 2

2. San Francisco

We’d love to spend Thanksgiving in San Francisco with it’s laid back vibe and cosmopolitan feel. How about a trip to Alcatraz Island to remind you to be thankful (take the audio tour, to get shouted at from previous convicts) then lighten your mood with a trip to Haight Ashbury, see the Golden Gate bridge and take a world famous cable car ride, perfect! Then come back to this plush apartment with floor to ceiling windows, a private balcony and amazing views.

1. New York

Ever since watching Home Alone, Friends, Sex and the City and Gossip Girl we’ve all dreamed of spending Thanksgiving in New York, to see the parade, have a coffee in Central Perk and generally skip around town in Manolos! We love this apartment complete with roof terrace and expansive living space, located in the East Village known for it’s hip and trendy bars and cafes – Carrie would approve!

You can stay in Wendy’s apartment for £177 per night

5 fabulous ways to wear a Poppy

The stunning art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, marks one hundred years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in the First World War. Created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, the breathtaking installation will see 888,246 ceramic poppies fill the Tower’s famous moat over the summer ending on the 11th November, with each poppy representing a British military fatality during the war.

At the end of the installation the moat will be filled with poppies creating a sea of red, inspired by a line in the will of a Derbyshire man who died in Flanders, knowing that everyone was dead and he was surrounded by blood, the man wrote: ‘The Blood Swept lands and seas of red, where angels fear to tread.’ You can buy one of these beautiful hand-made poppies for £25 with at least 10% of the proceeds being split between six service charities, if all poppies are sold they hope to make millions for their chosen charities. You can order your poppy here.

Here at fabulous we stock Kleshna poppies, beautiful sparkling poppies designed to be worn everyday to show your support for the armed forces past and present. 15% from every sale goes to the Royal British Legion.

Kleshna Poppies start from £12.99 and are available at fabulous

Alex and Ani Bangle of the Month: October, Power

Jo Stroud is the owner of fabulous, a boutique jewellery retailer with three fabulous stores, a Pandora store and designer jewellery eCommerce site. This month’s Alex and Ani ‘Bangle of the Month’ is the Skeleton Key, representing Power – here Jo shares with us why she thinks the campaign ‘I’m not bossy I’m the boss’ (supported by Beyoncé, Condoleezza Rice and Sinead O’Connor, to name but a few) is so relevant to fabulous staff and customers:

The fabulous Senior Management Team. From Top Left Laura, Becky, Rhian. Bottom Left, Anna, Jo and Sinade

“I set Fabulous up 9 years ago, in 2005, after a career of 7 years in book retail, followed by 7 years in marketing. We are very female-dominated as a business, and my entire senior management team is made up of bright, ambitious, energetic and positive women.

I have been lucky enough to have strong female role models throughout my career, and it has definitely made a difference to me.

I went to an all-girls school, with a strong and impressive Head Mistress, where we were brought up to be academic and ambitious, with the assumption that we would go on into professional, management or leadership roles. Then at university, I joined a networking group called ‘Women in Publishing’ and met several talented women in senior roles within publishing companies.

This included a bright and ambitious American lady who ran the flagship Dillons Bookstore on Gower Street, in London. It was because of her that I joined Dillons after university, and spent 7 very happy years there. The HR Director, and the Marketing and Buying Directors, were all women during my time there, so it seemed entirely natural to me that women would be in leadership roles.

When I moved to a Marketing Agency, the senior management team was initially all men. By the time I left, 7 years later, I was one of three female senior managers, and there were three men – so we had managed to even the leadership team!

Without such role models through my education and early career, I may well not have been so confident in myself, and my ability to set up and run a successful business. I have been called bossy many times in my life, and I don’t mind at all: I know my own mind and am not afraid to give direction or express my views. But I can so easily see that girls who have not been lucky enough to have the same upbringing and education as me can lack that confidence, and be discouraged from going for leadership roles.

So, I totally agree with Sheryl Sandberg, of Google and now Facebook, when she says ‘I want every little girl who’s told she’s bossy, to be told instead that has leadership skills’. At fabulous, we completely support the ‘I’m not bossy I’m the boss’ campaign, to encourage young women to be as ambitious and as powerful as they want to be. The Alex and Ani Skeleton Key Bangle, with its meaning of Power, Choice and Liberation, expresses this perfectly”.
