New Autumn/Winter Trends: Fabulous Fashion Weeks

As London, Paris, New York and Milan wrap up their bi-annual fashion weeks for the start of the Autumn/Winter season, fabulous looks at the current trends inspired by the world’s capitals of style…

Trend 1: Sheer Elegance
Sexy sheer fabrics are here to stay. A big hit in the fashion world this summer – the trend of flirty sheer, see-through fabrics are a key item for Autumn/Winter 2011. Mixing sheer with lace creates a romantic look. Many looks on the catwalk this year were sultry and revealing, but for something a bit more subtle try layering a sheer top over a solid, or go for a garment with smaller sheer sections in it. Sheer shirts, such as these New Look shirts, are the ultimate accessory for layering over outfits this season.

Wear With: Tresor Paris
Shamballa bracelets from Tresor Paris are the ultimate fashion accessories this season. The range of monochrome and colour designs let you add even more glamour to your sheer outfit. Many celebrities from The Saturdays to Emma Watson have been spotted wearing these luxurious creations!

Trend 2: Nostalgia
A must-have for your wardrobe this season is British Heritage designs and fabrics. Plaid, Tweed and Tartan can be found on anything from dresses to capes! Wax jackets and boots are practical as well as fabulously stylish. ASOS have a fantastic range making the most of this exciting trend.

Wear With: The Branch
The elegant wooden jewellery from The Branch will go fantastically with the browns and greens of the Nostalgia trend. Add a quirky element to this trend with The Branch’s Rosewood earrings and bangles.

Trend 3: Gem tones and Gemstones!
Gemstone hues of Amethyst, Emerald and Ruby are perfect for evening wear this season. For a stylish and sophisticated look, the best way to wear these glamorous tones is in contrast with black. Topshop have a simply gorgeous range of velvet leggings that are right on trend!

Wear with: Missoma
Missoma’s designs are bold and contemporary and the absolute epitome of style. The creations are inspired by the designers’ travels to Mexico, India, Morocco and Thailand where they hand-source their gemstones. Match gemstones with gem tones for the ultimate look.

Trend 4: Tomboy
It’s all about button-up shirts and tailored trousers for the boy-girl look this season. Tailored and unisex outfits are top of the fashion world right now. Ankle grazing trousers and straight up and down blazers create a smart but stylish look. Wear with briefcases and brogues. Explore this look at both ASOS and Topshop.

Wear With: Good Work(s) Make A Difference
To add the perfect accessory to your tomboy outfit layer up stylish leather bracelets from Good Work(s). These bracelets have a range of inspirational messages, with studs and crystals in a range of colours. The ‘Good Work(s)’ company also donate 25% of their net profits to good causes. Here in the UK they support charities that offer shelter for families and children affected by domestic violence.

Trend 5: Jumpers, Jumpers, Jumpers!
Comfy and fashionable – large knitted jumpers are a necessity this Autumn/Winter season! Bright colours and loud patterns are especially on trend. Roll necks also look great teamed with pinafore and skater dresses. See Dorothy Perkins’ range of knitwear for ideas.

Wear With: Azuni
Layer this look with long girly necklaces and bracelets from Azuni to create a textured, eclectic and personalised style.

Trend 6: Vivid Trousers
Stand out from the crowd and bring colour into those grey winter days with colourful skinny jeans. The trick is to wear with a muted coloured top so all the attention is drawn to those make-a-statement trousers. See Boohoo’s range of coloured skinny jeans for ideas…

Wear With: Swatch Bijoux Colour Code Bracelets
These funky and vivid bracelets will add a quirky feel to your outfit. Wear in a contrasting colour to those brilliant trousers or create a stylish look with a matching bracelet. You might even want to try stacking these bracelets to really grab some attention!

Trend 7: Leather and Fur
Black Leather is everywhere this season: on skirts, trousers and shirts! For a rock-chick look wear with wedges or heeled boots. Fur coats are also an essential – gorgeously glamorous! See Miss Selfridges’ exciting range of Leather and Fur items here!

Wear With: Thomas Sabo
Thomas Sabo’s jewellery oozes rock glamour. Wonderful statement creations from this designer are a must-have to complete your Leather and Fur wardrobes.

Look Forward to Next Summer Already!

Following her visit to International Jewellery London 2011 yesterday, Zoe from the Solihull store discovers the Next Big Thing

Yesterday was my first ever visit to a jewellery trade fair and I was overwhelmed by the varying designers and styles that were represented there. It was a great opportunity to view next season’s collections – and definitely had me wishing we were back in May, about to embark on Summer rather than battling the rain and wind at the beginning of September!

What really stood out to me as a key jewellery trend for Spring/Summer 2012 was 3D pendants, especially in spherical orb style shapes. They appeared in all different shapes and sizes – from statement and bulky to delicate and miniature. I was particularly intrigued by Sphere of Life Jewellery, whose pendants came in a mix of Sterling Silver and 18-carat yellow Gold plated Silver – another big trend that will stay with us across seasons – and depict all sorts of different meanings and symbols. The designs include “Lovebirds”, which incorporates a cage effect orb with two birds perched inside, and “My Missing Piece” – a sphere with a jigsaw pattern engraved on it. Also, one pendant called “Curly” has a swirly pattern – my personal favourite as I have curly hair! Sphere of Love has been created as the perfect gift: the packaging has been very well thought out and each piece comes with a meaning card. It was all so lovely I’m not sure I could wait to be bought one as a gift!

As I mentioned, the mix of Silver and yellow Gold is retaining its appeal for the foreseeable future, but what I did notice as a popular new style was the use of matte/brushed Silver as well as oxidised Silver, which has a dark grey or pewter kind of colour. At Alexis Dove, I learnt how they were using Ruthenium as a vermeil plating on Sterling Silver, to create a gothic yet classic look for their delicate flower designs. Overall I really like the mix of the metals, because not only does it add a very modern and stylish edge to a lot of pieces, while the price of Gold is so high, the mix makes such luxe looking items affordable.

The one other theme I saw popping up was stacking rings incorporating brightly coloured semi-precious stones. Much like Missoma‘s new collection, the use of faceted stones in yellow Gold plated settings looks amazing and were in evidence at Spinning – who introduced their new Birthstone rings – and also Lola Rose, and it seems the bigger the better was the mantra of designers for next season. The chunkier and more sculptural the pieces, the more beautiful they look – especially when you wear multiples at once!

Finally, the piece that really stood out to me was the Story bracelet. As I am infamous at fabulous for much preferring to wear yellow Gold coloured jewellery rather than Silver, I was thrilled to see the wide choice of 18-carat Gold plated charms available to fit onto these super stylish Leather wrap bracelets! Most of the charms are the hanging style, but some are flat and look like beautiful cocktail ring stones! As with all charm bracelets, the overall look created is totally personal, but I would definitely make mine a vision of sparkle! What’s more – we may be stocking Story in the very near future, and I can’t wait to get my hands on a bracelet of my own!

New Thomas Sabo Charms – Autumn/Winter 2011!

From acorns to feathers, nature is the theme to be wearing this season!  Bring the summer to your outfit all year round with stunning a Sterling Silver shell charm or bring a cool glamour with an iconic Sabo flower charm.

Fall in Love in Fall

Autumn is the time of romantic strolls in the park, or to be curled up in front of the fire with your loved one. The new collection celebrates this with cute heart charms and cupids. The perfect gift for that special person in your life!

Ice Princess

Winter Wonderland is this season’s fairy-tale theme! Sparkling snow clouds and cute Eskimos are the perfect charms to add to your collection.

Fabulous Favourites – I’ve chosen my top three favourite new charms from this season’s collection!

Thomas Sabo’s designs are renowned for their boldness and elegance, and this charm is no exception. This cute Sterling Silver heart in red Enamel is exactly on trend this season. A small heart can express big feelings and is the perfect gift for someone special.

This beautiful Sterling Silver charm is the cutest polar bear perched on top of an elegant Freshwater Pearl. The creation has delicate black and white Enamel detail. This charm will look stunning on its own or with other charms from the collection. Irresitable!

September Birthstone – Stylish Sapphire!

A maiden born when September leaves
Are rustling in September’s breeze,
A sapphire on her brow should bind
`Twill cure diseases of the mind.

-September Birthstone Poem

All about Sapphire

The September birthstone, Sapphire, is chemically and structurally the same as Ruby. Sapphires are well known as being bright sky blue, but can be nearly any colour except shades of red (since those are called rubies). Sapphires are associated with the values of truth, sincerity, commitment, and loyalty. Sapphires are extremely durable and only Diamonds are harder. Artificial Sapphire crystals are used as the crystal face in Rolex watches, which are extremely scratch resistant.

Did you know?

• Ancient civilizations believed that the world was set upon an enormous Sapphire, which painted the sky blue with its reflection.

• In ancient times, Sapphires were thought to be protective against poison. A common belief was that a venomous snake placed in a Sapphire vessel would die! Ground to a powder, the gemstone was believed to cure colic, rheumatism and mental illness, and to strengthen eyesight.

• It was also thought that star Sapphires were a powerful talisman that would protect travellers.

• The gemstone is prominent among the British Crown Jewels, and Prince Charles chose this as the engagement stone for his fiancée, Princess Diana.

Gift Ideas

The Sapphire represents prosperity and nobility. It is the perfect gift for someone who is about to undergo a change in their life – from marriage to a new job! It is also the gemstone for the 5th, 23rd and 45th wedding anniversaries. A star Sapphire is typically given on the 65th wedding anniversary. See our fabulous range of sapphire jewellery here.

How to care for your Sapphire Jewellery

  • Sapphires should be cleaned regularly to keep them bright. The quality of the sparkle is determined by the refraction of light through the transparent gem’s facets.
  • Remove your Sapphire jewellery before carrying out household cleaning or gardening chores.
  • Take care not to expose the jewellery to chlorine bleach as this can damage the setting.
  • Sudden changes in temperature could also cause the stone to crack.
  • Sapphires can be cleaned at home with a soft cloth and warm water with dish detergent. For deeper cleaning, soak the piece of jewellery in a dish detergent and warm water solution for 10 to 20 minutes, then scrub gently but firmly with a soft brush. Dry carefully with a soft cloth.
  • Because of the hardness of Sapphires, it’s important to protect other gems from being scratched by the stones. Store your Sapphire jewellery in a soft pouch or cloth.

You can read more about Sapphires at Wikipedia!
