Thomas Sabo’s POP goes Asia

It’s almost time for Thomas Sabo to release their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection to the world, and Sinade Prosser from fabulous Solihull tells us all about her sneak peek this week!

I’m always excited as August approaches (not only because it’s nearly my birthday – eek) but as I know that the next collection of must-have pieces from Thomas Sabo will be launching imminently – this year I was even more thrilled as I got to go along, with Jo, to this year’s buying and to help handpick the pieces we will stock at fabulous.

Arriving early afternoon on Thursday at the Mayfair hotel in London, myself and Jo took our seats in the private Screening Room ready to see the ‘POP NOW THE EXOTIC ISSUE’ movie – the film that would set the scene for the jewellery we were about to discover.

We were excited to get stuck in and buy some jewellery, and when we entered the hall we were able to get up close and personal to the wall of Thomas Sabo jewellery displays and artwork… as well as gorgeous Chinese Temples and cute Panda props.

The Seasonal Collection featured bouncing Pandas (from £129), Chinese Dolls and Temples and Bamboo inspired glittering rings and earrings.  The pieces were offset with faceted balls of Black Obsidian and the ‘Great Blessing Symbol’ carrier (which stands for joy, health and long life).

But we knew that a firm favourite would be the new, rich Amethyst, classic black and Pearl bracelets (from £79).  Each is detailed with a Sterling Silver orb decorated with Cubic Zirconia – perfect to stack with your current Thomas Sabo bracelets.

Rebel at Heart truly embraced the dragon, with a beautifully detailed pendant studded with black Cubic Zirconia – fans of the signature Thomas Sabo snake will love this!  The Chinese lanterns with tactile tassels and lotus lockets offset with fans in rich reds bring the modern fashions and Eastern traditions together beautifully.

Finally we got to explore the Classic Collection – the most fabulous of them all.  Our favourite is the delicate feather collection, with designs that wrap around the wrist and finger or hang from chains as pendants and earrings.

To our surprise (and delight), Thomas Sabo have also adapted their winged heart collection, fashioning the designs into arrow heads, keys and even masks, with the addition of dazzling white briolette stones that transform them for the upcoming social season.

And for those who were fans of last year’s Autumn/Winter styles, these have been updated in classic black – they are perfectly dramatic statement pieces that demand attention.

It’s a simply stunning collection – and I’ve already picked the five pieces I need – we can’t wait to see our customer’s reactions.

We had a lovely day and left clutching Thomas Sabo fortune cookies and fans – I cannot wait to see what the Charm Club collection will bring… watch this space!

All about Rubies

The Canning Jewel

The Canning Jewel

For thousands of years, the ruby has been seen as one of the most valuable gemstones in the world. Known for its excellent hardness and brilliance, it is also extremely rare. Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum, one of the hardest minerals on Earth. Rubies have a high status and are surrounded by mystical beliefs in many cultures.

The value of a Ruby is mainly determined by color. The brightest and most valuable “red”, called pigeon blood-red, is the most renowned. After color follows clarity: similar to Diamonds, a clear stone will be more valuable. Cut and carat weight also determine the value of a Ruby.

Rubies have been used in beautiful jewellery throughout history. One of the most famous pieces of Renaissance jewellery is the Canning Jewel. The baroque Pearl pendant, shaped like a Merman, has Rubies set in the tail, and another group set in Gold hang from the bottom of the pendant.

To see beautiful Ruby jewellery with a modern twist, our collection at fabulous with designers including Thomas Sabo and Trollbeads use Rubies in their fantastic creations.

Did You Know?

  • “A drop of the heart’s blood of Mother Earth” is how the Ruby is described in the Orient.
  • The name ‘Ruby’ comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’, which means red.
  • Some ancient cultures believed that Rubies, as well as other gemstones, grew on trees, just like fruit. The Rubies would begin budding as small white gems, and would slowly grow and ripen, turning red in the light of the sun. When the Ruby was saturated with red colour, it was ready to be plucked.

Gift Ideas

The red colour of a Ruby radiates warmth and vitality. It is no wonder that Rubies are symbols of passion and love, and therefore a perfect gift for a special someone. It is also the stone for 15th, 40th and 80th Anniversaries. At fabulous we have a select range of ruby jewellery suited to everyone’s tastes!

How to care for your Ruby Jewellery

Rubies are hard and durable, so are not easily damaged and are very easy to care for. However, here are our top tips for looking after your Rubies!

  • It is not recommended to wear a Ruby if you are doing work using harsh chemicals.
  • Rubies should be stored in a fabric-lined box, away from other pieces of jewellery, as they may scratch other, softer gemstones.
  • Clean your Ruby using soapy water and a brush, or a commercial jewellery cleanser.
  • Rinse the stone thoroughly and dry after cleaning it.
  • A Ruby’s beauty will last for my years to come if cared for properly!

The collections are extremely versatile and look just as stunning worn casually in the day or to add glamour to an evening outfit. The Ju Ju collection launched for Spring/Summer ’11 and includes pieces with beads made from horn and resin, exuding a more relaxed feel. Behind the Scenes at the fabulous Summer Garden Party 2011

Our Summer Garden Party continues to be a fantastic day out for everyone involved, and we’re excited to take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of this year’s event!

See our Garden Party Photos on Facebook...

The day kicked off early for the fabulous team, arriving first thing at the beautiful Mallory Court hotel to get everything ready. The morning flies by every year as we set ourselves to creating fabulous jewellery displays and serene browsing areas.

Designers and representatives arrived throughout the morning to prepare their displays, and we had the pleasure of chatting to them as the event drew closer, even getting an exciting first glimpse at brand new collections. We’re very privileged to have so many designers who enjoy getting involved with the Garden Party – we met Andrew from Azuni, Wendy from The Branch, Amanda from Trollbeads, Mikayla from Lola Rose and Chloe Moss and her mum from ChloBo, to name but a few. Needless to say, we were all very excited!

And how can we forget the fun of sneaking off to one of Mallory Court’s incredible rooms to change into our dresses and glam up fabulous style!

Of course the real excitement started when everyone arrived and the event began. Guests were greeted with a fabulous warm welcome and a glass of Pimm’s, and there was time for everyone to relax, chat to the designers and get a feel for the collections we had on display throughout the hotel.

After we’d all had a good look around, everyone headed to Mallory Court’s beautiful garden and terrace area to hear Jo Stroud’s welcome and introduction to the event. This is always a great chance to get an insight into how Jo chooses new collections for fabulous, and to find out what fabulous is all about.

One of the highlights of the event always follow’s Jo’s welcome – lunch! Guests were treated to a wonderful three course spread from Mallory Court’s Michelin starred restaurant, and after desserts and coffees some of our new collections were modelled by the fabulous girls, while the designers introduced their jewellery to the guests.

After lunch came the other highlight of the day, which is of course shopping! The sun was out for what proved to be a relaxing, enjoyable afternoon of browsing, trying on everything that caught our eye, and finally choosing our favourite new pieces to treat ourselves to. And to top it all off, each guest received a special fabulous goody bag on their way home.

Thank you to all of our guests and to everyone who helped make this such a wonderful day – we can’t wait till next year! And don’t forget… grab your tickets early, because this event is always an early sell-out.
