Celebrate March birthdays with the birthstone for this month, Aquamarine.
“By her who is this month was born
No gem save Aquamarines shall be worn
They will ensure her constancy
True friendship and fidelity.”
Aquamarine is arguably one of the most popular gemstones used in modern jewellery design. With its beautiful pale-blue colourings, Aquamarine is said to be symbolic of faithfulness, courage and friendship, encouraging communication and harmonious relationships.
The word Aquamarine is derived from the Latin for seawater, named for its delicate blue hue and its association with the ocean; in legend, it was said to be the treasure of the mermaids, and sailors often carried the stone as a charm to protect them at sea. Women, too, made the most of the mystical properties of Aquamarine, believing it aided a happy marriage and brought joy and wealth.
Aquamarine is found in Brazil, Nigeria, Zambia and China, amongst other places, and varies from very pale sky-blue through to sea-green. The deeper the colour, the more valuable the stone, and Aquamarine’s gentle colourings have made it an incredibly popular stone for jewellery designers, including Argent of London and Nomination.
March also introduces the Pisces zodiac sign from 19th February to the 20th March. The symbol for Pisces is the fish, and people born under this star sign are said to be romantic, generous and honest.
