Celebrate February birthdays with the birthstone for this month, Amethyst.
The beautiful purple colourings of Amethyst make it one of the most popular gemstones used in jewellery. Ranging from pale lilac through to rich mauve, Amethyst is symbolic of sincerity, peace and inner strength, believed to give the wearer courage and a calm disposition.
Amethyst takes its name from the Greek for “not intoxicated”, born from the stone’s reputation for preventing drunkenness! In mythology, Dionysus, the god of wine and intoxication, persued a maiden named Amethystos. She refused his affections, and prayed to the goddess Artemis to remain chaste, who transformed her into a beautiful white stone. Dionysus, shamed and humbled by Amethystos’ desire to remain chaste, poured wine over the stone as an offering and thus died the crystals their signature purple colour.
Amethyst was also worn by medieval European soldiers for protection in battle, due to its association with healing and cool-headedness. It is mined in Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia, and the qualities of the stone vary between localities, and even individual mines. Amethyst is a favourite stone of many of the designers at fabulous, and features in designs by Dower & Hall, Azuni, Thomas Sabo and Spinning Jewelry.
February also welcomes the Aquarius zodiac sign from 20th January to 18th February. The symbol for Aquarius is the water bearer, and people born under this star sign are often independent, creative and entertaining.
